Analyzing CD Covers-Pre Production

THE STONE ROSES
This album cover is from the first album by The Stone Roses. The album cover is very iconic to The Stone Roses as the lemons in the picture are like the bands icon. Also the background painting was made by John Squire who was the guitarist in the band so this is why they have the lemons and this background. Also the red white on blue stripes on it are iconic as they are a very british band which red, white and blue are the colours of the union jack. The writing on the front is big and bold and the main feature of the album cover, this is so it will catch the audience's eye when it is on the shelf in the music store. It is a very messy album cover but sort of shows the lifestyle of the band members which was very messy with drugs and alcohol. The back of the case is very plain and original but the gold writing stands out well against the black background.

MILES KANE-DON'T FORGET WHO YOU ARE
This album cover is by Miles Kane's second album, it consists of him standing next to a little diner counter, with people working behind the counter and walking past. There are more people on the cover but Miles Kane is mainly in focus. This is to attract the attention more to him when you look at the album cover. The name of the artist and the album name is out of the way of the picture and is at the top of the cover. This shows that the main feature of the cover is actually the image. The colour of the text is a bland colour but it fits with the picture well.  The main colours of the colour are white and red, as he is English and from Liverpool, these are two iconic colours for both of these places and the album name is 'Don't Forget Who You Are' the colours work well with the name. The back of the album carries on with the colour scheme of red and white and with the diner as it has a picture of one of the workers from the diner. The colour of the text is the same colour on the back as it is on the front as well. The lighting in both pictures is high key lighting which gives it a more positive look to it.

THE SMITHS-THE SOUNDS OF THE SMITHS

The cover of this album is of the four band members of The Smiths. All four people are making eye contact in the picture, this draws the audience in when it is on the stand in the shop. The picture is in black and white which is not very joyful to look at and is quite depressing but The Smiths are well known for their music to be quite depressing. The writing on the cover is big, bold and bright so it is very eye catching and easy to see. This will also draw in the audience as the writing is very easy to see against the colour of the picture and background. The colour of the text is the same colour as the background on the back of the case. The back of the case is very plain and there isn't much about it. It has the name of the album again on the back and the track list of the CD. The writing on the back is vey clear and easy to see colourwise however the tracklist text is quite small and a little difficult to read.

Analysing Magazine Covers

MALE ORIENTATED

MAIN IMAGE
The main feature of this magazine cover is the main image. The reason for this is because it takes up a lot of the front cover and even covers a lot of the masthead. The main image is effective as all five people in the image are all making eye contact which will draw the readers in. It is big enough to be able to see from the newsstand which will draw the readers in easier. Its in the centre of the page as it is the main feature and it is what is going to get the readers attention.

MASTHEAD
Even though the main image does cover a lot of the masthead people will still be able to tell that this is the FourFourTwo magazine because it is well known and recognisable.

COVERLINE
The coverline is big and right in the middle of the page, this is because it is the main article in the magazine and it is the most likely thing to draw the reader in as they are more likely going to be interested in this article more than any other article in the magazine as that is the main one. The coverlid colours go with the main image as the main colours on both are black and yellow.

FEMALE ORIENTATED

MAIN IMAGE
The main image is the main feature of this magazine cover. The person in the image is making eye contact which will draw the reader in when on the newsstand. It covers quite a chunk of the masthead as well which shows it is a important feature of the cover. It is a good size as it is not too big or too small and will draw the readers in when on the newsstand. It is also in the centre of the page which sort of makes it the centre of attention on the cover.

MASTHEAD
The masthead is big and bold on this cover. Even though it is covered up a little it is still recognisable as it is a well known magazine. The colour of the masthead goes with the image as the hair colour is the same colour as the writing of the masthead.

COVERLINE
The main coverline on this magazine cover is '75 sex oves men crave'. This is a female topic as women would talk about this subject and would also like to know more about it. The coverlines (puffs) are very female orientated as a lot of them are about sex, men and makeup. The colours of all the coverlines also go with the masthead and the main image as red is used a couple of times in the coverlines.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE ORIENTATED MAGAZINES
On both magazine covers the people in the main image are all making full eye contact so both magazines draw there readings by doing this. Also both main images are covering parts of the masthead which shows the main image is the main feature but also both magazines are well known enough to do this. The people in the main images are gender appropriate to the magazine as men are on the male orientated magazine and a women is on the female orientated magazine. Both magazine covers have a main coverline which both will draw the reader in wanting to read the article. However the female orientated magazine has a lot more puffs than the male orientated magazine.
